Designing this outdoor space from scratch was a new and exciting challenge. The main hurdle was the limited footprint—finding a way to make it feel functional, open, and visually engaging all at once. The clients gave me full creative freedom, but with their target market in mind, the design needed to feel contemporary and accessible without losing character.

​As an eco lodge, it felt important to lean into natural materials. We carried the timber exterior through into the interior, using raw wood and soft, natural fabrics to create a cohesive flow. House plants played a big role too, softening the space and blurring the line between indoors and out. When working on rural projects like this, I always try to reflect the surrounding landscape—in this case, taking cues from local wildflowers and the warmth of the sunset, which led to a palette of ochre, blush, and soft greens.

​With such a compact space, every design decision had to work hard. Fold-out tables, concealed storage, and sliding doors were all carefully integrated to maximise functionality without adding visual clutter. The sleeping area was separated with curtains, which could be drawn back to open up the space or closed off for privacy and warmth.

​The bathroom, with no opportunity for natural light, became a chance to do something more atmospheric. I leaned into the darkness, inspired by the idea of a mossy, cave-like space that echoed the surrounding woodland. Matte green tiles wrap the walls, floors, and ceiling, creating an immersive wet room. Antique brass fittings add warmth and contrast, while a large circular backlit mirror brings in a moody glow.

The end result is a space that feels considered and connected to its setting.
