"Transforming a small room into a hybrid space suitable for both resting and working. From a blank canvas to a highly functional and cosy study & spare room"
My client was struggling to create a space that could be used as both a spare room and study. They worked from home a few days a week, working late into the evening sometimes, but also needed the room to double up as a very occasional sleeping space. Creating multi functional spaces is an increasing challenge for those living in small city appartments.
After establishing that the room was mostly for work, I focused predominantly on this, prioritising desk space and a layout to support workflow. For a suitable office space and guest room we sourced a sturdy mid century set of drawers that would be divided between stationary and clothing. A dimmable wall light doubled up as task lighting and could be dimmed in the evenings for a more relaxed atmosphere.
The space constraints meant it wasn't possible to have a bed and desk erect at the same time, so this problem was solved using a futon fold out chair/bed and a fold out desk, made and designed by myself, securely attached to the wall with brackets. To continue saving on space mood lights were mounted to walls, side tables were able to be folded away and the office chair could fit neatly into the hallway cupboard.
Because the room was so small we leant into this by colour drenching the room in a dusty dark blue with subtle green undertones, the deep colour created cosiness - perfect for evenings spent in the office, getting away to read a book in the afternoon, or enjoying as guest room. The deep colour was complimented by the blush pink futon and warm woods used on other furniture pieces.
